President's Message

Happy New Year and First Quarter of 2012, EMAT friends!

As I prepared to begin my role as your 2012 professional association President, I find that it’s important to look to the future while always being mindful of what you are leaving behind. I started by reflecting on this past year, and all that EMAT has accomplished.

1. Educational Conferences. Our conference committees worked tirelessly on both the State Emergency Management conference as well as our own 5th annual EMAT conference. EMAT worked with Chief Kidd and the Texas Division of Emergency Management and provided classes where members learned valuable updates on matters impacting the way we will continue to prepare and plan in Texas. These conferences are an incredible opportunity for our members to network with other Emergency Management professionals serving in the private and public sector through out the state.

2. Electronic Voting. We were proud to implement our first Board of Director’s election through electronic voting. This was an excellent opportunity for each member to exercise their EMAT membership right to vote.

3. Electronic Dues. In an effort to save money on postage and printing costs, we sent out dues notices electronically in early November. This was a success in that many members took the opportunity to renew their membership and pay online.

4. Effective communication with regional, State, Federal and International Emergency Management agencies. We were able to promptly push messages to different Regions in Texas for assistance needed with state disasters, specifically the wildfires. Additionally, we are able to get news and important reports to our members from IAEMS, FEMA and TDEM.

This could not have happened without all of our dedicated and hard working 2011 volunteers and volunteer leaders – THANK YOU! EMAT truly has some amazing people among its membership.

As is tradition for each new year as President, I had to come up with my theme for 2012. As I thought about it, I asked myself, “How can I use my position to make a positive impact?”   “Will my life’s meaning be reflected in my work with EMAT?” It didn’t take me long to realize that I wanted to focus on legacy. Legacy is about giving back – to those around us, to our communities, to our profession; about being a servant leader and a role model. I know what I want to be remembered for, and I strive to live that each and every day. Of course, I am more human than others sometimes and I make plenty of mistakes. I live by one rule…to leave things better than the way I found them. Think about all the ways others have helped you – either personally or professionally. How has EMAT helped you? How can you give back? Through mentorship programs, succession planning, professional development, networking, community service, volunteerism, etc. There are so many ways to get involved and help others and your profession. What will your legacy be?

I am honored to serve as your 2012 President. The 2012 Board of Directors and I are committed to enhancing your EMAT membership experience, and hope that you will share in the volunteer experience with us.

Wishing you all the best in 2012!

Yours in service,

Sharon Nalls, CEM, TEM
